The Maxwell distribution is referred as a probability distribution with applications in physics & chemistry. Maxwell distribution forms the basis of the kinetic theory of gases that explains many fundamental gas properties, including diffusion & pressure. The Maxwell distribution is also used in electron transport & other phenomena.
The Maxwell distribution can be derived using statistical mechanics. Maxwell distribution corresponds to the most probable energy distribution, in a collisionally-dominated system consisting of a large number of non-interacting particles in that quantum effects are negligible. Therefore, interactions between the molecules in a gas are generally quite small; the Maxwell distribution provides a good approximation of the conditions in a gas.
